Locally common in open grassy open-forest in hilly areas of coastal eastern Australia from s. of Cooktown (Q) to near Grafton (NSW). Gregarious, in social group with dominance hierarchy amongst males; up to 50 not uncommon. Active any time day or night, grazes ferns, grasses and herbs.

Also known as Ship Rat, Roof Rat and House Rat. Originated in tropical Asia before being spread to Europe by the Roman, and then across the world by Europeans. Omnivores; serious pest to farmers and crops.
