Locally common in open grassy open-forest in hilly areas of coastal eastern Australia from s. of Cooktown (Q) to near Grafton (NSW). Gregarious, in social group with dominance hierarchy amongst males; up to 50 not uncommon. Active any time day or night, grazes ferns, grasses and herbs.
