Also known as Water Buffalo. Introduced into NT to Melville Island in 1828 and Port Essington on Coburg Peninsula in 1838, has since spread widely. Confined to flood plains of Top End of NT, s. too Pine Creek and e to Borroloola. Cause of serious damage to the environment and carrier of bovine tuberculosis so trying to be eradicated. Nocturnal and crepuscular, spending middle of day in muddy wallows. Much of the year in single sex herds.
