Circumglobal in temperate and sub polar waters, mostly 30-60 degrees south. Migrates and gives birth in shallow bays around southern continents. In Australia found May-October between Perth and Sydney. Does not feed in Australian waters. Swims slowly, blowing every 1-2 minutes; shallow dives, often breaches, tails, slaps flippers, or rolls belly up.
